Mahatma Gandhi was born in the small town of Porbandar, India in 1869. Gandhi’s last name was not given to him by his parents, but by the Indian people. He said that his parents were great, and taught him many lessons of life. He also confessed he had done some bad things throughout his teenager years such as stealing gold from his brother and eating goat meat. However, he didn’t want to become unfaithful and disobey his parents, so he had stopped sinning and became a young steadfast grown man.
Later as Gandhi’s became a young man, he wanted to become a lawyer and eventually he became one and practiced law. He also wanted to practice medicine but did not pursue this. However, the idea of going to England to pursue law made him curious and happy. So, on September of 1888, Mahatma Gandhi began to pursue his dream of going to England. The journey to England took about three weeks.
Later, after learning about law in England, he wasn’t satisfied and doubted his understanding of the law particularly as it related to his home country. He set back to India desperately looking for a job, and after little success as a lawyer finally he got his “big break” when he was hired to go to South Africa to work on a complex case. It was in South Africa that he learned the true function of a lawyer, to unite divided parties. Also during his time in South Africa he learned about the cruel life for Indians throughout the country, and how minimal their rights were. He used his knowledge and experience to try and give the Indians their freedom, and he did so with the use of non-violent protesting.
During Gandhi’s time in South Africa, and future years in India, he lived by the quote on question 13, by fighting against the South African government. Also, he believed in showing supporters that you can still get your rights with non-violence with a good mindset and positive attitude. He truly lived by this quote, by showing the world and citizens of India that if you keep trying to do the right deeds, and the right things for the world and goodness of others, then you will reach your goal in the end. Conversely, he taught people who will try and do bad things and do negative things in their life will eventually have to pay the price for what they did.
A show that interests me in Indian pop culture is the TV show called “Arjun”. It is about a cop named Arjun Raute, and has become to be known as a cop with an attitude. He works in an Emergency Task Force (ETF) group, where he has a bad rap throughout the organization. His skill and work ethic is so good however that they have to make him the leader of the task force. Finally and most importantly he is known to solve any case given to him.
An American TV shows related to this is the show “NCIS”. This show is related to the Indian show “Arjun” because a whole team or force investigates a crime, and tries to find clues and solve crime. NCIS also has a main leader who is known to solve cases, no matter what. In summary, the TV show “Arjun” and “NCIS” relate to each other because they both involve team leaders of a crime investigation force, and they both investigators have a natural “gift” of investigating crime work and finding the killer.
A major NGO based in India is the NGO called “Goonj”. Goonj’s mission is to provide all citizens of India with nice, comfortable clothing to wear, that will help them to survive throughout the year. Goonj is a great organization because the organization will even go to the poorest regions of India and hand out comfortable clothes to the children and families. Not only do they give nice clothing away, but they also raise money for India to assist with problems such as yearly flooding, unsanitary water, and unclean living conditions. In addition, they also provide donated boxes to persons who want to help a person in need.
The organization Goonj helps people to connect and come together by teaching people all over the world, that even through you have something little, be grateful for what you have everyday. People should not take for granted everyday things we enjoy here in the United States. Like clean water, a nice house, a car, and having enough food to eat. Even when you donate to the organization and learn about the “art of giving” you will know your donation to the organization will help a person or family who will receive it and be very grateful.
